Chapter 23

I had precious little time with my client before he was taken back to his cell. The stark, cold, cement walls of the county jail lawyer’s room seemed to close in on me. Ty sat before me, stoic as always.

“You understand what’s happening,” I said. “You get what Rafe Johnson tried to do today.”

Nothing. Not so much as a blink from Ty. My blood ran hot.

“He’s trying to establish you’re a killer, because you’ve killed before.”

Still nothing.

“Ty,” I shouted. “Did you say those things to Chris Dvorak? Did you confide in him?”

“I’ve never lied,” he said.

“That’s not what I asked you. Chris did. Or he withheld the truth from me. Did you tell him to? If it comes out that you in any way tried to influence his testimony …”

“I never tried to influence anyone,” he said. “Chris is free to say whatever he wants.”

“I need to know what happened out in those woods,” I said.

He turned to stone again, staring at a point on the wall just over my left shoulder.

“Do you even remember? Is that what this is?” I asked. “Ty, you have to talk to me. It has to be now.”

Still nothing but a blank stare from him.

“We have a chance,” I said. “For the first time since this whole thing started, I can see a path, Ty. A way to at least raise reasonable doubt on first-degree murder. But more than that, if you snapped. If something happened where you reacted to something that wasn’t really right in front of you …”

“You want to tell the jury that I’m crazy?” he said, his tone devoid of any emotion.

“No,” I said. “Not crazy. Not in the slightest. I can’t even begin to imagine the things you’ve seen in your life. The things you were forced to endure …”

He turned his gaze back to me. I searched for even the tiniest flicker of understanding, of emotion. I saw none.

“Rafe Johnson’s plan may have backfired today,” I said. “He put Chris Dvorak on the stand to try to show the jury that you’re a trained killer. That you knew what you were doing. That you were executing some objective and maybe John Lansky got in the way. He’s trying to prove you’re a monster, Ty. But I don’t think that’s what’s going on.”

I saw the slightest arch to his brow. “You think I’m a monster, Cass?”

“No,” I said. “But I think you’re being tortured by something. I think you’re clinging to some sense of duty. To your country. To Beth. It’s time you told me who you’re trying to protect. Because it’s not serving you. If you don’t tell me the truth, I won’t be able to help you. The thing you asked me to save you from … I won’t be able to. That jury is going to put you in prison for the rest of your life.”

He looked back at the wall.

“He said something to you—Lansky,” I said. “Or he reminded you of something or someone.
